a few seconds,have become the latest big battleground,in social media,tiktok popularized short form videos and,it's been the front runner for some time,but as we told you last week it's facing,increased competition from rival service,google's youtube shorts,the company says shorts is now reaching,more than one and a half billion users a,month,so how did shorts which launched in 2020,get to this point so quickly,how do creators feel about using it and,what is youtube's end game in growing,this part of its platform,joining us to discuss all of this is our,social media reporter salvador rodriguez,hi sal thanks for being here hey zoe,thanks for having me,so start us off with a bit of background,why did youtube decide to launch shorts,in the first place and i mentioned it,was you know gaining on tick tock's,popularity but just how popular is it,yeah from what we can tell youtube,shorts might be second place in this,new type of social media content you,know in the us,we talked with the folks over at inmar,intelligence and they found that youtube,shorts is picked as the number two,preferred service for this type of short,form video and that's only gained since,the last time that they did this survey,back in september,for youtube they decided to go in on,this type of content because it just,made a ton of sense for them they're the,original,video platform of the internet right but,also you know i spoke with a lot of,creators and some of them pointed out,that in many ways tick tock poses a,threat to youtube youtube decided to,launch its shorts in india why did it,pick that market and what's it been like,for shorts growing there,yeah i think the reason they started in,india is because just before youtube,launched there in september 2020 a few,months prior india had actually banned,tik tok and several other chinese apps,they cited national security concerns as,the reason for doing that and that just,created a huge opening for youtube to go,in to a really huge market and you know,get started test out this new type of,thing but really gain a foothold in that,market and that's something that from,our reporting we can tell is continuing,to carry them today you know we spoke,with one creator his name is jonathan,lyons he uh he dresses up as a as a huge,rat and he posts these videos on youtube,shorts he told us that almost 80 percent,of his views are coming from india,and even more of his views come from,nearby country so it's really become a,stronghold for youtube,now as they grow and they've hit this,huge mark of 1.5 billion users you know,that's something that you can really,build upon and what they're really going,to have to do is make sure that they,build up that audience here in the us,because,they're doing good with india they're,doing good with older americans but when,it comes to advertising which is really,the next step the most desirable,audience for advertisers are those young,americans those young consumers that,they can you know grab a hold of and,keep us customers for a lifetime i want,to pick up on something you said you,know youtube shorts is popular with,older americans i mean why would,americans kind of 45 and up be,gravitating towards youtube shorts,youtube already had more than two,billion people who go to youtube,regularly,and they've also built out a ton of,analytics tools for creators so they can,get a sense of how well their videos are,doing um who's watching them and from,where and basically youtube took those,two things,and turned them into success you know,they've been around since 2005 so they,have older users at this point,and i think,one reason why if you're an older,american,and you're going to youtube shorts,instead of tick tick-tock it simply,comes down to,changing your habits you know you've,probably been going to youtube for more,than a decade and getting into tik-tok,it's not really hard but it still,requires that someone download one more,app sign up for one more account but i,guess the big question is how does,youtube transition you know from the,older viewers and from a big indian,market to a global market with younger,viewers,yeah i think it's gonna take time but,i've also noticed you know as a regular,consumer watching tv i've noticed that,they've been you know doing more and,more marketing just the other day i saw,youtube ran an ad for pride month and,they were saying like hey you know it's,pride month like show your pride by,posting a youtube short and every,every video that you post you know will,make one more donation to you know some,group involved in pride and i think like,those type of strategies will just pump,more and more content into that youtube,shorts pipeline and what they really,need to get to is to a place where their,videos are the ones that are starting,trends and reall

YouTube shorts just crushed Tick Tock,YouTube has added more ways to make,money off of YouTube shorts and it's,becoming easier and honestly more epic,but of course before we begin click,subscribe for more crazy YouTube news,like this YouTube shorts are getting,monetized now like officially monetized,before they had the YouTube shorts fund,which is basically they just got a bunch,of money gathered up to pay the top,shorts creators but now YouTube shorts,are able to be monetized like officially,which I think is like great they pretty,much have destroyed Tick Tock by doing,this like creators have an incentive now,to post on YouTube shorts rather than,Tick Tock because honestly The Tick Tock,fund or whatever it it's pretty bad like,it's limited to certain regions and not,everyone gets it it's just pretty bad so,YouTube doing this is definitely a huge,win for YouTube short it's like holy,crap so let's go over what's new so yeah,they have the shorts fund but now there,is new ways to monetize coming in 2023,so YouTube says that there will now be,ads shown in the shorts feed which have,happens on Tick Tock like you scroll,through and an ad pops up kind of like,on Snapchat how you look through the,brand stuff and there's ads I personally,don't do that because the ads are way,too frequent on Snapchat it's so,annoying so these ads will show up in,between shorts this will give creators,like you a more sustainable option to,grow with short form content heck yeah,dude there's also going to be super,thanks for shorts which hey that's great,if people want to donate they can Tick,Tock does have something like that I,think but this is where it gets even,better Creator music spice up your,videos with music without missing out on,Revenue so you can use copyrighted music,in YouTube shorts now and no one will,care because it's kind of like how Tick,Tock has sounds you know YouTube is,adding music so you can use copyrighted,music and it won't matter at all but it,kind of comes to a detriment here all,right basically all the money generated,from the ads will go to people who get a,lot of views on their shorts so not,everyone will get paid for it but if you,get a lot of views on shorts you will,get paid right but a big chunk of that,money does go towards paying for the,music licenses so YouTube takes their,cut the music Brands take their cut and,then creators get the rest which I don't,like that's a bit much especially for,people who aren't even using copyrighted,music like hey it's an option I probably,won't utilize it though so it's kind of,lame right that that part's like uh dude,but hey at least there is going to be,monetization for this which I'm very,excited for I'm actually gonna go,hardcore with shorts as well as normal,content because hey it's the way of the,future I gotta sort of get used to,making shorts I guess you know,everyone's doing it so you gotta jump on,the bandwagon right but it is awesome,still that they're doing this and I,guess in a way it is nice it is a big,fix to the copyright crap if they could,add that to main videos that might be,nice in a way maybe they should just,have it so that creators who use the,copyrighted music will get a cut taken,away from the payout you know that goes,towards the brands the people who don't,use it won't have to pay it that might,be an easy fix to that but but maybe,there's like not enough money for that,right but this news will also change the,YouTube Partner program eligibility,which is awesome I remember back in the,day when the new requirements were set,it was pretty bad it was rough you know,so you will now need a thousand,subscribers and 4 000 public watch hours,in the last 12 months that's the old,requirements that's just that's normal,but instead of 4 000 hours you could,also have instead of that 10 million,valid public shorts views in the last 90,days which is a lot better now look,shorts get a lot more views regardless,because they're so quick and fast people,watch more and more of them so that's,actually not too bad I'd say those are,pretty equal last 90 days 10 million,it's pretty doable so this new Revenue,thing will replace the YouTube shorts,fund which does make sense because this,one's actually like generating Revenue,so that's all right it says each month,revenue from these ads will be added,together and used to reward shorts,creators and help cover cost of music,licensing so YouTubers will get 45 of,the revenue but that's after the music,people have taken their Cuts so it isn't,it isn't a true 45 right no matter if,they use music in the shorts uh I don't,know dude this Revenue will be,distributed to creators based on the,number of views their shorts get in each,country so it's all based on Country,which yeah that makes sense but you,don't need to make crazy amount of views,you just have to get you know good views,yeah I'm super excited and pumped about,this this means a lot more people are,gonna make a
